Combined Fire Station and Library
Herts CC commissioned the building of a new library, co-located with the village Fire Station on land owned by the County Council. The planning application proposed the alteration and extension of the existing fire station to provide a new library alongside refurbished and improved fire station facilities. Large glazed openings in the timber bringing a good amount of natural light to the interior of the new library and allowing views into and out of the public spaces. The Fire and Rescue Service now shares some accommodation with the Library Service including the kitchen, workroom/control room, and toilet provision.
In July 2019 Wheathampstead Community Library moved into its new modern premises.
The new alterations inside the fire station; the new facilities and the shared usage for both services provide for the community in a new improved purpose-built development.
